How to Stay Calm, Focused and Ready for the Leaving Cert

The week before the Leaving Cert can feel intense. On the countdown to the start of the exams on June 3rd stress levels tend to rise, sleep routines can slip, and many students suddenly feel you should be studying every hour of the day. In reality, this final week is not about cramming huge amounts of new information. It is about preparing yourself mentally and physically to perform at your best.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is trying to “catch up” on everything you don’t know. At this stage, focus on strengthening what you already understand. Go over key topics, exam structures, sample questions, formulas, quotes, essays, and timings. Quality revision beats panic studying every time.

Past exam papers are one of the best tools you can use in the week coming up to the start of the exams. They help you become familiar with wording, timing, and how marks are awarded. Reviewing marking schemes can give valuable insight into what examiners are looking for. Practice writing under timed conditions where possible, especially in subjects that require long written answers and where you will be under time pressure in the exam.

Sleep is also crucial to help with concentration, memory, and decision-making. A tired brain struggles to recall information. It has been a long and tough year so you may feel really tired at this stage. Aim for a consistent sleep routine coming up to and during the exams, rather than staying up late trying to squeeze in extra study.

Your environment matters too. Try to reduce distractions from phones and social media. Comparing yourself to others online can increase anxiety unnecessarily. Some students will appear calm, others stressed — neither tells you how they will perform in the exam hall. Focus on your own preparation.

It is equally important to look after your body. Eat properly, stay hydrated, and get some movement each day, even if it is just a short walk. Physical activity helps regulate stress and improves focus and fresh air is really helpful to clear your mind and re-energise you.

Parents can help most by keeping the atmosphere calm and supportive. Encouragement, reassurance, and practical support are what matters most at this stage.

Finally, remember this: the Leaving Cert is an important exam, but it does not define your worth or your future. There are many routes to success, and there has never been so many pathways to follow your dream. One set of exams will never fully measure a person’s ability, character, or potential. Go into the exams prepared, steady, and confident in the work you have already done and look forward to an enjoyable summer and the next exciting part of your journey!
