Motivation tips, setting goals and targets, assessing your learning style, developing study skills, drawing up a study plan and putting it into practice.

Senior Cycle options and subject choice

  • Look at the options available such as Transition Year, the Leaving Certificate Applied Programme (LCA), Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP), and the traditional Leaving Certificate. Examine the structure of each option, the education options within the programmes and the opportunities available once you have completed them.

  • Get support in making subject choices for Senior Cycle, looking at your skills set, interests and the impact of choices on possible college courses and future career options.

  • Identify the entry requirements for college courses, apprenticeships and training opportunities.

  • Explore your strengths, personality traits, talents, aptitudes, skills, achievements and natural abilities to find the perfect career choice for you.

Course research and college applications for Further and Higher Education

  • Explore what path you want to take after school. Get clarity on the many options available to you.

  • Look at specific courses to include in your CAO application and make sense of the detailed information relating to courses and colleges and the application process itself.

  • Examine options for applying to college outside of Ireland including the UK and Europe. Get help with preparing a personal statement and for interview.

  • Examine all the options available in Colleges of Further Education to complete Courses for Progression (PLCs) and learn about their links onwards to Institutes of Technology or Universities in Ireland and abroad.

  • Look at the direct-entry possibilities offered by Teagasc in Agricultural and Horticultural colleges.

  • Learn about the HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) and the DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) schemes – check your eligibility, the supports available and the application process itself.

  • Check out the financial supports available for 3rd level students and adults returning to education.

As a parent you want to support your son/daughter when they make important choices about their future. The best way to do so is to be well informed yourself. You know them longer than anyone else and have an important role to play in helping them at this stage of their career journey but it can be daunting and sometimes overwhelming to sift through all the information that is available.
