Get Set for Leaving Cert Results 2024!
The anxious wait is almost over for the Leaving Cert Class of 2024, with results out on Friday, August 23rd. Students will be able to access their results online, through the Candidate Self Service Portal (CSSP) from 10am with results being issued to schools at the same time. To access the results on the CSSP, students will need their examination number, CSSP password and PPS number. Having this information at hand before the morning of the results will ease extra stress for students and parents/guardians. The CSSP has reopened for students who have not yet registered for the ‘Results Services’ on the portal (this only applies to those who did not register in March) or who have misplaced their password. A dedicated helpline for queries relating to the portal is also available for students and parents. For further details see - https://www.examinations.ie/cssp/2024/
62,700 students sat the Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied exams this year, so there are bound to be many households where stress levels are high while students await the results. Leaving Cert results day is a significant milestone, a reason to celebrate the end of one phase of a journey and the beginning of another. It is a time to look back with pride and look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead. It is really important to remember that Leaving Cert results neither define a student nor prevent them from realising their potential after school.
Results Day
Because Leaving Cert students now access the results on the Candidate Self Service Portal, it can be a real comfort to have company when getting the results. There is nothing like having the support of a parent/guardian, sibling, relative, friend or work colleague on a day that is filled with lots of different emotions. Guidelines issued to schools have also requested that Guidance Counsellors and members of Student Support Teams be made available to meet with students if needed. When students receive their results, they will see the subject, level and grade achieved such as H1, H2, H3, 02, 03 and so on. They will not see actual percentages, the breakdown of marks or the points achieved on Friday 23rd.
Access to Examination Data
Once the results have been issued, students need to look carefully at the important dates and deadlines around accessing their examination data and scripts which is also done through the CSSP. From 12 noon on Tuesday, August 27th, students can log onto the CSSP to see their marks for each subject, including for each component of the exam such as practicals, project work, orals and so on as well as the post marking adjustment. In April 2024, the Minister gave a commitment that the overall Leaving Certificate results in the aggregate will be no lower on average than last year. In line with the Minister’s commitment, a post-marking adjustment was made to all of the results. This means that, after the marks for all components were marked and combined, some further marks were added on to the total mark before the grade was calculated. Because the total number of marks for the examination is different for different subjects, with some being marked out of 600, others out of 400, and so on, the number of marks added on in the post-marking adjustment will vary across subjects to reflect this.
Applying to View Scripts
All students have the option to apply to view their examination scripts but must apply to do so through the CSSP within a very tight timeframe. This facility opens for application at 5pm on Tuesday, Augusts 27th and closes at 8pm on Wednesday, August 28th. Applications to view LCA scripts are done via email on viewlcascript@examinations.ie but students will need to access his LCA Viewing Application Form on the CSSP and the same timeframe applies.Viewing of the scripts takes place online mainly via the CSSP over the 24-hour period between 9am on Saturday, August 31st and 9am on Sunday, September 1st. A smaller number of scripts are still correctly manually and they are viewed in the school during an allocated time slot on August 31st.
Applying to Appeal.
Students who are disappointed with their grade in one or more subjects may wish to appeal the result. An appeal is a process whereby students apply to have their exam script remarked. It is strongly recommended to all students that they view their examination script before applying to appeal as this gives them the opportunity to check for errors. It is very important for students to remember that they may be downgraded as well as upgraded on appeal. Detailed marking schemes for each subject are available on www.examinations.ie Once students have viewed examination scripts and marking schemes for their subjects, there is the option to apply to appeal the results and have the paper remarked. There is a fee of €40 per subject for Leaving Cert and €15.50 per subject for Leaving Cert Applied, but if the student is upgraded on appeal the fee is refunded for that subject. Applications to appeal and payment must be made through the CSSP from 10am on Sunday, September 1st to 5pm on Monday, September 2nd. Late applications will not be considered.
Second Chance Maths Exams
Students who do not achieve the Leaving Cert maths grade required for their chosen course may have the chance to sit an alternative maths paper set and graded by the university. If they achieve the required grade and already have the other entry requirements and points, they may get a CAO offer of their chosen course after the Round 1. This doesn’t apply to all universities or all courses so students need to check out the details on the ‘Important Dates’ section of www.cao.ie and individual college websites.
Help is Available
Once students get results on the 23rd, there is still an anxious wait until August 28th for the CAO Round 1 offers when they learn about what college places they are have been offered. The most important thing to reflect on coming up to the results is that there is not just one pathway open to students but several. Students should celebrate reaching this milestone, safely and appropriately, and be assured that regardless of what results they get, there is a bright future ahead, full of promise and opportunities.
The State Exams Commission (SEC) have a helpline for students and parents who have queries about the portal and exams on 1800 111 135 or 1800 111 136 from 9 am to 5pm. Outside of these hours, queries may be e-mailed to candidateportal@examinations.ie.
The National Parents Council Post Primary (NPCPP) will also be running their annual helpline which is staffed by qualified Guidance Counsellors from Friday, August 23rd to Saturday, August 31st.
